What are Huske mats for? 10 ways we actually use ours

TL;DR

Huske mats are intentionally simple so they can do more. Placemat, splat mat, play surface, picnic blanket, craft underlay, travel companion. This is how we actually use ours, and some ways we did not expect.

If you are looking for a placemat that is just a placemat, or a splat mat that is just a splat mat, you are in the wrong place. When I designed this product line, flexibility and multi-functionality were at the core. Being able to fold a mat away or slip it into a bag means it is never in the way between uses. No need to sell it on when your child outgrows a stage, because it works at every stage.

A little backstory

There is a considered art form in making things as simple as possible, so that they can serve you for as long as possible. No tags, no seams that can fail or break or gather pigment or germs over time. The surface is pure silicone, including the logo, which means there are no additional polymer treatments.

The longer you have been in the parenting game, the more "buy less, choose well" resonates. Here are 10 reasons we stand behind that.

1. They last

Compared with other mats on the market, Huske mats are made from a premium silicone leather textile that is unique globally. That makes them seem expensive by comparison. But you will not need to replace them. They are built to withstand daily use, spills, and the kind of mess that children generate without thinking twice. From washable markers to glue guns to nail varnish to wine: the mat can take it.

2. Easy to clean

Wipe down with a damp cloth and it looks new again. The mats are waterproof on both sides, so you can also submerge them in a sink of soapy water and rub fabric on fabric to tackle anything stubborn.

For tougher marks, we have a stain guide that covers everything from playdough residue to turmeric.

3. Lightweight and travel-friendly

They fold flat, weigh very little, and fit into a bag. Whether you are camping, picnicking, hiking, or just need an extra surface at a friend's house, the mat comes with you. We have taken ours on flights, to the beach, on hikes in the Alps, and to restaurants where the high chair looked questionable.

4. Safe from birth

The mats are non-porous, odourless, and food-safe. You can fold one up after a messy session and know that nothing unexpected will grow behind the scenes. They are certified to Oeko-Tex Standard 100, Class I, which is the strictest class and covers products intended for babies. That means safe for tummy time, baby-led weaning, and everything that comes after.

5. Sustainable and non-toxic

Made in small batches in South Korea, where the manufacturing expertise exists. The raw materials are sourced within Korea, so the supply chain is short and transparent. The textile carries a Korean Eco Label and is recyclable. We are actively working on circular reuse processes.

Packaging is plastic-free. Orders ship carbon neutral.

6. They look good in your home

The mats come in a range of colours and they are designed to sit comfortably in a grown-up room, not scream "kids' product" from across the living room. The textured surface feels close to leather and catches light in a way that a flat silicone product cannot.

They are dual-toned but not double-sided. The top is smooth, the underside is anti-slip. That two-tone is not just aesthetic; it is practical. You can always tell which side was on the ground. If you have done baby-led weaning at someone else's house, you know why that matters.

7. Multipurpose and multi-stage

These mats are not just for playtime or mealtime, and they are not just for kids. Here is a partial list of how we and our customers have used them:

  • Play mat at home and in the park
  • Placemat or tablecloth for mealtimes
  • Splat mat under a high chair for baby-led weaning
  • Underlay for messy arts, crafts, and sensory play
  • Picnic blanket, beach mat, hiking seat
  • Underlay for flower arranging, bike repairs, or ironing
  • Suitcase blanket when travelling (lay it over a hotel bed)
  • Potty training surface
  • Paddling pool base on sand

The list keeps growing. We hear new use cases from customers regularly and it is one of the most rewarding parts of running this brand.

8. A treat for the senses

The textured surface is soft to the touch and offers a quiet sensory base for play. Take one outside under a tree in summer and watch the shadow play on the surface. That is the pleasure of a textured, minimal material: it responds to its environment rather than competing with it.

9. Designed with attention to detail

As simple as possible, but no simpler. No hanging tags, nothing that can break and fail.

Architect-designed in Switzerland, in collaboration with an experienced Korean manufacturing team. The surface is pure silicone, including the logo. No additional polymer coatings, no screen printing that can peel. Every decision was about longevity and simplicity.

10. For every age and stage

Tummy time for newborns. Weaning surface for babies. Craft mat for toddlers. Homework underlay for school-age children. DIY surface for adults. The mats are open-ended by design, making them suited to sensory and Montessori-inspired play as well as the messy, practical realities of daily life.

If any of this sounds like it would make your life a little easier, have a look at the full range. And if you already have a mat and have found a use case we have not listed, I would love to hear about it.
