Textile care guide, silicone leather mat cleaning tips
This page is the practical one. How to clean the mat, what it can handle, and the handful of things to avoid.
Most of this I have learned by living with these mats since 2021. My children have tested every scenario you can think of, and a few I would rather not remember.
If you want the material story, certifications and production details, that is on the sustainability page.
The textile
Three layers, under 1mm thick. The silicone is derived from quartz sand and is the same grade used in baby pacifiers.
The mat is made from silicone coated textile. A smooth silicone surface bonded to a polyester mesh, with a textured anti-slip silicone base. It is not vinyl, not PVC.
It is certified OEKO-TEX Standard 100, Class I (safe for direct contact with baby skin and mouths). Your baby can eat directly off it.
Daily cleaning
A damp cloth. That is genuinely it for most days.
The surface is non-porous, so food, milk, yoghurt, paint, and most of what children produce wipes straight off.
For anything slightly stubborn, rub the mat against itself. Fabric on fabric. This releases pigment caught in the grain of the silicone. It sounds odd but it works better than any sponge I have tried. A soft cloth with mild dish soap handles the rest.
Never use a harsh brush. It breaks the surface.
Stains and colour
Most of what ends up on the mat comes off without drama.
Children's art supplies, food, felt pens, paint, oil, turmeric, marker. If something very pigmented sits for a few hours on a lighter colour, it may leave a faint mark. For those, baking soda and vinegar, then leave the mat outside in the sun. UV light fades the stain but not the silicone leather.
Glues and varnishes peel off once they dry. Two exceptions: superglue and silicone glue both bond to the surface permanently.
And one more: never use bleach on the mat. Not for cleaning, not for stain removal, not ever.
Rule of thumb: if it has "permanent" in the name, keep it away from the mat.
Washing
Think of it like cashmere.
Hand wash cold, or alone in the machine on a delicate cycle. The goal is preserving longevity, not getting it surgically clean. Most of the time you will not need to machine wash it at all.
Do not put it in the dishwasher. I know the shape is tempting. Just no.
The anti-slip underside attracts dust and dog hair by design. For a full reset, submerge the mat in the bath and hang to dry.
Heat
You can iron directly on the mat at a normal setting.
Hot baking trays from the oven, warm plates, a pot of soup straight off the hob. All fine. I regularly use the mat as an oven glove: fold it over, grab the tray, lay it down on the table. For something piping hot I double the mat over for extra protection.
The only real limit is red-hot coals and open flames. A domestic iron, a baking tray, underfloor heating: none of those come close.
Scissors, knives and sharp objects
This is the one thing I hear about most.
The mat is deliberately thin (under 1mm) and that is what makes it so easy to fold, roll and pack away. But it also means scissors and knives can cut through it. Children will test this. If your child has access to scissors during craft time, keep an eye on the mat.
If it does get a small cut or tear, silicone glue repairs it. It bonds to the silicone surface and stays flexible when the mat is folded. Use silicone glue, not superglue.
Glue, varnish and tacky substances
PVA, craft glue, wood glue, varnish, nail varnish: they all peel off once dry. Let them go wild with the glue stick. If something feels tacky or sticky while still wet, leave it. It is much easier to peel off when dry than to wipe while it is still spreading.
Floors and grip
The textured underside grips on most floors.
On some wooden floors, though, the area underneath the mat can become slippery over time. The anti-slip gradually removes the floor's patina and natural silicone oils transfer to the surface.
Spray diluted soap and water on the floor, rub it with a dry cotton cloth. I stand on the cloth and shimmy around. It works. If you want to go further, re-oil the floor.
A word on buckling. The mat is under 1mm thick. It is soft and light. Under a high chair or in heavy traffic areas it can buckle and fold rather than lying perfectly flat. This is the trade-off for a mat that does not have hard edges that scuff your feet.
It sits flat when placed flat. If buckling would really bother you, a rigid mat might be a better fit. I would rather be honest about that.
One more thing: silicone can build up a static charge, especially during active play on dry floors in winter. It is harmless but worth knowing about. Wipe the mat with a damp cloth before use, touch a metal object to discharge, or lightly mist the surface with water. Bare feet generate less static than socks.
Vacuuming
Pick the mat up before you vacuum. It is light enough to lift with one hand. Honestly I like this. It means you actually vacuum the floor underneath, not just the surface of the mat.
Robot vacuums generally do not work well with the mats. Some manage, some try to eat them. It depends on the model.
Outdoors and water
The mat works at the beach, by the pool, in the garden and at the park.
Chlorine and salt water are both fine. It stays soft and flexible in heat and cold, does not crack or harden.
To get sand off, submerge the mat in water. The sand falls away instantly. Faster than shaking, less mess than brushing.
Folding, rolling and creases
You can fold the mat or roll it. Both are fine.
It will need something to hold it (an elastic band, a tie, a strap) otherwise it springs back open.
Creases happen. The mat creases readily, and if it has been packaged for a while the fold lines can look surprisingly deep when you first unroll it. Do not panic. They fade with use, especially when the mat is on the floor and feet are walking over it. I have never had creases not come out.
Make sure the mat is fully dry before folding it away for any length of time. If water gets trapped in the fold and there is food residue in there too, mould can develop.
I have mats from 2021 that still look as good as the day I made them.
"We used the mat at the beach to make mountains of sand with rivers that flow to the sea. Our kids loved it. It is also just an amazing beach blanket."
- SwitzerlandQuick answers
Can my baby eat directly off the mat?
Yes. The silicone is certified OEKO-TEX Standard 100, Class I, the same grade used in baby pacifiers. It is safe for prolonged contact with baby skin and mouths.
Is it safe on underfloor heating?
Yes. The silicone is heat stable well beyond underfloor heating temperatures. The only limit is direct contact with red-hot items or open flames.
Can I fold or roll the mat?
Either works. Use an elastic or tie to keep it bound. Creases fade with use, especially underfoot. Make sure it is fully dry before folding for long-term storage.
Can I use it outdoors?
Yes. Beach, pool, park, garden. Chlorine and salt water are fine. Submerge it to remove sand.
Can I repair a cut or tear?
Small cuts can be repaired with silicone glue. It bonds to the surface and stays flexible when folded. Do not use superglue. It bonds but is too rigid.
Why is my wooden floor slippery under the mat?
The anti-slip underside can gradually remove the floor's patina, and natural silicone oils may transfer to the surface. Spray diluted soap and water on the floor, rub with a dry cotton cloth. It clears up quickly.
Does the mat buckle on the floor?
It can, especially under a high chair. The mat is under 1mm thick and soft, so it may buckle in heavy traffic areas. This is the trade-off for a mat without hard edges. It sits flat when placed flat, but if this would bother you, a rigid vinyl mat might suit better.
