Material & Safety
What are Huske mats made of?
Huske mats are made from silicone leather: a material formed by bonding a silicone coating to a woven fabric backing. The silicone is the same grade used on infant pacifiers. It is waterproof, non-porous, and free from PVC, vinyl, and toxic additives.
What is silicone leather?
Silicone leather is a textile made from a silicone coating bonded to a woven fabric backing. It is not PU leather, vinyl, or animal leather. The surface looks and feels soft, but is waterproof, non-porous, and free from PVC, phthalates, and EVA foam.
The material used in Huske mats is patented and was developed to meet the safety standards applied to infant-grade products. It does not off-gas, does not absorb liquid, and requires no chemical flame retardant.
Are Huske mats safe for babies and toddlers?
Yes. Our mats are tested safe for direct skin contact. They are VOC-free, formaldehyde-free, and free from PVC and phthalates, making them suitable for all ages including infants.
What certifications do Huske mats have?
Huske mats carry the following independent certifications: OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1 (the highest class, certifying safety for babies), Korean Eco-Label, KC Certification, and VOC-Free certification. All are verified by third-party testing bodies, not self-declared. For the full material story, see our material and safety page.
How do silicone leather mats compare to EVA foam play mats?
EVA foam is the most common material in interlocking play tiles and soft floor mats. It is lightweight and cushioned, but worth understanding before you buy. EVA foam can contain formamide, a substance flagged in independent safety testing across Europe. Foam also absorbs liquid, so spills and accidents soak in rather than wipe off.
Huske mats use silicone leather: non-porous, wipe-clean, and free from EVA, PVC, phthalates, and VOCs. They carry OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1 certification.
The main trade-off is cushioning. Silicone leather is thinner than foam tiles and does not provide the same impact absorption underfoot. For a padded floor, foam is softer. For a certified-safe, wipe-clean surface, silicone leather is the cleaner choice. The full material story is here if you want the detail.
Why is a Huske mat more expensive than foam alternatives?
Huske is a silicone leather baby play mat, and the price difference from foam comes down to material quality, certification, and lifespan. You pay more once, and then you don't pay again.
Foam play mats, EVA tiles especially, cost less upfront. But they delaminate, absorb liquids (which creates mould risk), and in some cases off-gas formamide, a substance classified as a reproductive toxicant under EU regulations. In 2010, Belgium and France both suspended sales of EVA foam puzzle mats over formamide concerns. France maintained the ban for six years. The EU responded with a binding directive limiting formamide in foam toys in 2015. They need replacing.
Silicone leather holds up. Mats first sold in 2021 still look the same today. The OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1 certification certifies the material as non-toxic and safe for direct skin and mouth contact. That is the same level required for dummies and bodysuits, and it involves real testing costs that cheaper materials skip entirely. It also wipes clean in seconds, which removes the need for machine washing, drying time, and replacement cycles.
If the numbers help: the Roam Round used under a high chair three times a day works out to less than 12 Rappen per meal over a year. A foam splat mat that needs laundering, drying, and eventually replacing costs more over the same period, with more effort along the way.
How long does a Huske mat last?
A Huske silicone leather baby play mat lasts a long time. Mats first sold in 2021 still look the same today.
Silicone leather does not peel, crack, discolour, or degrade under normal household conditions. The material is rated to over 20,000 abrasion cycles and is not affected by sunlight, cold temperatures, repeated cleaning, or food contact.
For context: PU leather alternatives, including premium brands, peel on average within 18 months of regular use. All Huske mats come with a 2-year guarantee against manufacturing defects.
The main risk to longevity is sharp objects: a knife, scissors, rough concrete. Everything else family life involves, BLW, paint, playdough, outdoor use, does not wear them out. Most customers move from using a mat intensively through the toddler years to keeping it permanently as a desk mat, table protector, or craft surface long after.
What makes Huske a good choice for families in Switzerland?
Studio Huske is a Swiss baby play mat brand, based in Zurich. The range was developed with Swiss family life in mind: smaller flats, parquet floors, terraces, parks, and an outdoor season that keeps going even when it gets cold.
The silicone leather material is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1 certified, the same safety level required for baby dummies and bodysuits. For parents who want a non-toxic, wipe-clean play mat without import hassle, everything ships within Switzerland via Swiss Post and typically arrives within 2 to 4 business days. No currency conversion fees, no import charges, no customs surprises.
The material handles the climate well too. Silicone leather is cold-resistant and UV-stable. It does not harden in winter temperatures or degrade in direct summer sun. It is also wipe-clean in seconds, which matters when it is moving between indoor and outdoor settings. A mat that works in a Zurich flat in February works at a picnic in July with no change in care.
Baby Use
Can a baby sleep or nap on a play mat?
Huske mats are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1 certified, the most stringent textile safety class for direct contact with baby skin. For a supervised daytime rest or short nap, the surface is clean and non-toxic.
For overnight or unattended sleep, current guidance (including NHS and AAP recommendations) is a firm, flat mattress in a cot. Our mats are not padded and were not designed for overnight sleep.
From what age can a baby use a play mat?
From birth. OEKO-TEX Class 1 is the certification standard for products in direct contact with newborn skin, the same class applied to baby clothing and bedding. The surface is non-porous, free from PVC, phthalates, and VOCs, and does not off-gas. A Huske mat is suitable for tummy time or floor play from your baby's first weeks.
Can a Huske mat be used as a portable changing mat?
The Wriggle (S, 65 x 37 cm, CHF 39) works well as a portable changing mat. It is waterproof, non-porous, and wipes clean in seconds. At 200g it folds flat into any bag. The Wriggle does not have raised edges or a safety strap, so use it on a flat, stable surface. Many of our customers use it as their everyday portable changing mat from day one.

For a visual comparison, see the size guide. Or take the Mat Finder quiz for a recommendation based on your space and how your child moves.
How do I choose the right mat?
The right mat depends on where you plan to use it, how much floor space you have, and how your child moves. Our Mat Finder quiz walks you through a few quick questions and recommends the best fit.
Does the Roam mat have raised edges or a lip?
No. The Roam is a flat, flexible mat with no raised edges, sides, or tray-style containment. It sits flat on the floor around the base of a high chair and creates a defined zone for food and mess. The flat design makes it easy to fold, wipe clean, and store.
Most high chair setups work well with a flat splash zone. If you need containment walls, this is not the mat for that.
Care & Cleaning
How do I clean my Huske mat?
Wipe with a damp cloth and a small amount of mild soap. Rinse the cloth and wipe again to remove any residue. Air dry flat. The surface is non-porous, so cleaning is quick and thorough.
How do I remove stubborn stains?
For tougher marks, use a soft cloth with warm soapy water and a little more pressure. A gentle cream cleaner also works well. Avoid bleach or harsh solvents, which can degrade the surface over time.
For persistent pigmented stains (turmeric, berry), leave the mat in direct sunlight for a few hours. UV light naturally breaks down pigmented stains in the silicone surface, the same way sun fades soiled baby clothes.
What should I avoid when cleaning?
Hand washing is the best way to care for your mat long term. If you use a machine, treat it the way you would a wool sweater or cashmere: delicate or hand-wash cycle, cool water, mild detergent, on its own. Silicone surfaces can pick up residue from other items in a hot wash, especially heavily soiled clothing.
Do not use bleach, abrasive scrubbers, or harsh chemical cleaners. Do not put your mat in the dishwasher. Air dry flat away from direct heat.
The mat slides on my floor — what do I do?
Every Huske silicone leather baby play mat has a non-slip texture on the underside, designed to grip hard floors. On most surfaces it holds well, but a couple of situations can work against it.
The most common cause of sliding is a fine layer of dust or residue on the floor that prevents the texture from making proper contact. Wiping your floor with a damp microfibre cloth and letting it dry before placing the mat usually solves it. On smooth or polished wooden floors, a diluted soap-and-water solution wiped onto the floor surface and dried before placing the mat creates better grip than a dry wipe alone.
It also helps to clean the non-slip side of the mat periodically. Dust and lint collect in the textured surface and reduce grip over time. Submerging the mat in water loosens the build-up quickly.
One thing to know: the non-slip texture is built for hard floors, not deep pile carpet. On thick carpet, the mat rests on top of the fibres rather than gripping a surface, so some movement there is expected.
My mat arrived with creases — is this normal?
Yes, completely normal. All Huske silicone leather baby play mats are folded for packaging, and fold lines on arrival are expected.
They are not permanent. Silicone leather is flexible, so the creases soften and disappear with use. Unrolling the mat flat on a hard floor and leaving it there helps; most mats are completely flat within 3 to 5 days of regular use. If you want to speed it up, place a few flat objects on the fold points while the mat settles.
If you store your mat folded between uses, the same fold lines will reappear. Rolling for storage instead keeps the surface smoother over time.
The fold lines do not affect the wipe-clean surface, non-slip grip, or durability of the mat.
How should I store my Huske mat?
Store clean and dry. Fold or roll it for storage and keep it in a dry place. If food residue is left on the mat before putting it away, a quick wipe is enough to prevent any build-up over time.

Indoor & Outdoor Use
Can I use my Huske mat outdoors?
Yes. The silicone leather surface does not absorb moisture, dirt, or grass stains, and wipes clean easily. Fabric and foam alternatives do not hold up the same way outdoors.
How do I care for my mat after outdoor use?
Wipe the mat down with a damp cloth after outdoor use to remove any dirt or moisture. Store it indoors or in a dry place when not in use. The silicone leather is UV resistant and handles direct sun well.
Does the mat stay flat outdoors on uneven surfaces?
Our mats lie flat and do not curl at the edges. On very uneven ground like grass or gravel, some movement is expected. For outdoor use, a relatively level area gives the best result. The material is flexible enough to follow gentle contours without bunching.
Does the mat crease or curl at the edges?
Huske silicone leather baby play mats lie flat and do not curl. On most floors, the non-slip underside holds it in place without any additional fixing.
What you will notice is fold lines from packaging when it arrives. These are not permanent. Silicone leather is flexible, so the creases soften with use. Rolling the mat out and leaving it flat for a few hours helps; daily use speeds it up.
PU leather alternatives are a different story. Creasing is a known long-term problem with that material: the folds become permanent, worsen over time, and eventually create trip hazards. Silicone leather does not behave that way.
If you store your mat folded between uses, the fold lines will reappear. Rolling for storage instead prevents this.
