What's inside?

Silicone leather is a silicone coating on a knitted polyester base, the kind of fabric most leather-look materials are built on. Both faces are silicone: smooth on top, textured underneath. No PVC, BPA or phthalates, nothing soaks in, and no chemical smell. Produced and certified under OEKO-TEX Standard 100/1, the class for products that touch a baby's skin.

Silicone leather has a fabric base with a silicone coating on both sides. Not vinyl, not PU, not foam. One continuous piece with no seams, no tags, no stitching. Nothing to trap food, nothing to fail over time.

Care
Wipe with a damp cloth for daily use. For a full reset, submerge in the sink. The textured underside catches dust over time and a soak clears it. Mild soap is fine. No bleach. Machine wash on the gentlest cycle (wool/delicates) works, but hand-wash is better for the mat long-term.

We use it as a placemat, but it is too narrow for our consumer/artist. With that said I think + 5-7cm would make it. Other than that it is nice color and high quality product.

Nice design, but…

I boughtbthis one to use it as a changing mat and later for my child to play with. I dont think it works well as a changing mat. It has a « non slip » side which is very problematic to keep clean. If you put that side on the floor, all kimds of dirt will stick to it (hair, little stones, dist, etc). If you use that side to put your baby on it, it gets tricky to change the diper, since the sticky surface wont let you glide the diaper beneath the baby, plus it will still attract hairs and dust…

I wish there were some mats without the « non slip » option.

Thank you for that feedback. Both sides do have a very destinct texture. The smooth side is designed for baby changing. Our products are designed to be very flexible and multifunctional and the antislip is very useful when used as a desk or table mat, so it wouldn't make sense to remove it. To clean the antislip side submerging in water is quickest, though I do know that's not always practical or possible. Lots of customers, including myself, do use it as a changing mat and are very positive about it. What this mat is made of

This is silicone leather. Not PU. Not PVC. Not vinyl. Not the "vegan leather" that peels after 18 months.

Silicone leather is a silicone coating on a fine fabric core. It doesn't off-gas, doesn't absorb liquids, doesn't harbour mould. Hot pans and baking trays can sit on it. It won't crack or fade if left outside in cold or sun, and it is stain-resistant to food, paint, adhesives, and ballpoint pen.

Produced and certified under OEKO-TEX Standard 100/1. That's the strictest class in the OEKO-TEX system, designed specifically for products that touch baby skin.

Two sides, two jobs

Smooth side up. Grip side down. The underside grips your surface so the mat stays put. The grip is not a separate backing: it's the same silicone, just textured instead of smooth. Two colours, two functions.

A note from Kate

I tried the plant-based leathers first. I wanted one of them to win.

Beeswax-coated cotton stops repelling anything once the wax wears off, and a mat you cannot wipe clean is not much of a mat. Apple leather is a third to a half polyurethane, so the plastic was doing the work, not the apples. Mushroom leather was the one I really wanted, and the companies making it closed.

So I chose silicone leather. I have mats from 2021 that still look new.

That was the brief from the start. Most things made for children run on planned obsolescence: a size, a season, a stage, then a replacement. This mat has none of those. There is nothing to outgrow, only uses that change, and it arrives in paper and cardboard you can recycle. It is the opposite of hedonic consumption, the quick buy that feels good on the day and is forgotten by the weekend. Fewer things to buy, wash, store and think about. I am not against owning things, I am against owning them twice.

This is the one most people meet first. Mine started life as a changing mat and now it lives on my desk, under a coffee cup, still going.

Things worth knowing

It arrives with fold lines.

All folded mats do. Lay it flat and use it. The creases fade as you use it. Walking on it, placing things on it, daily life flattens it out.

The grip side collects dust and hair.

That's its job. The underside grips your surface so the mat stays put. Smooth side up, grip side down. If it's collecting dust, it's working.

It's 65 x 37 cm. That's a placemat, not a play mat.

The smallest mat in the range, and the one that travels. A fabric changing mat costs less and needs washing every time. This one wipes and goes back in the bag.

It can mark a sealed or lacquered surface.

One customer reported a colour change on a floor under a larger mat. That is one report and I have not worked out the cause. If your changing table or worktop is sealed or lacquered, lift the mat now and then rather than leaving it in one spot for months.

The colour may not look like it does on your screen.

No screen shows it exactly. The colour you live with is the smooth side that faces up. If it arrives and it is not what you pictured, it goes back within 60 days, clean, undamaged and in its original packaging.

Care instructions

Daily cleaning: Wipe with a damp cloth or wet wipe.

Stubborn marks: Gentle soap and water.

Deep clean: Hand-wash gently. You can machine wash on your most gentle cycle (wool/delicates), but for maximum longevity, hand-wash.

Heat-proof: You can iron on it, place hot baking trays on it, use it as a surface for anything household-hot. The only exception: red-hot coals (BBQ embers) will burn through.

Do not: Dishwasher. High heat + food residue can coat the silicone surface with a film. If someone puts it in the dishwasher by mistake: submerge the mat in a pot of gently boiled water with washing-up liquid for 30 minutes, then rinse. The film lifts off.

Storage: In daily use, damp is fine as long as it is clean. For long-term storage, treat it like camping gear and store it dry.

Non-slip side: Always faces down. Will collect dust and hair (that's it gripping). Submerge the mat in water to clean the grip side. Dust, lint, and sand release instantly.

How thick is it, and does it cushion?

Every Studio Huske mat is 0.7 mm thick. It won't cushion a fall the way a foam mat does, but it isn't hard like vinyl either: it feels soft underfoot and warm to the touch, and the leather-like grain is lovely to run a hand over. Being thin is what lets it fold into a bag or drape over the edge of a table, and it is tougher than the number suggests: the material is tested to 20,000 abrasion cycles.

What is the non-slip underside made of?

The same silicone as the top surface, finished with a texture so it grips instead of sliding. There is no rubber backing, no PU layer and no separate anti-slip coating. Smooth side up, grip side down.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe for my baby to lie on?
Yes. OEKO-TEX Standard 100/1 is the strictest textile safety certification, tested for harmful substances and approved for direct contact with baby skin.

Will it stain?
Silicone leather resists staining from food, paint, and most household substances. Wipe promptly for best results.

Can I use it as a placemat?
Absolutely. Many customers use it as a permanent table protector for meals, crafts, and homework.

Does it smell?
No. Silicone leather is VOC-free. No "new mat" chemical smell.

What's the difference between the smooth side and the textured side?
Smooth side faces up (the surface you use). Textured side faces down (grips your table or floor).

Can I use it for nappy-free time?
Yes. It's waterproof, wipeable, and produced and certified under OEKO-TEX Standard 100/1 for direct baby skin contact. Lay it down, let them kick. When they're done, wipe and reset.

Do the mats contain PFAS?
The finished fabric was independently tested for total fluorine and more than 30 individual PFAS compounds in the most recent testing round, none detected. Across two years of laboratory reports, not one individual PFAS compound has been detected. No test can prove an absolute, so the full numbers are published in the PFAS lab results article.
