This is silicone leather, not a petroleum-based plastic.

Is this just plastic?

A fair question. Most “vegan leather” play mats are PU or PVC: petroleum-based materials that require chemical processing to achieve a soft, flexible surface.

This is not that.

Silicone leather is not petroleum-based. It carries none of the plasticisers or phthalates that soften conventional plastics, and it does not off-gas the chemical compounds associated with plastics and synthetic foams. The surface does not react with skin, milk, food, or nappy accidents. Non-toxic, non-porous, and safe for floor-level use from birth. It was produced and certified under OEKO-TEX Standard 100/1, the tier reserved for items a newborn can lie against.

Silicone leather has a fabric base with a silicone coating on both sides. Not vinyl, not PU, not foam. One continuous piece with no seams, no tags, no stitching. Nothing to trap food, nothing to fail over time.

Care
Wipe with a damp cloth for daily use. For a full reset, submerge in the sink. The textured underside catches dust over time and a soak clears it. Mild soap is fine. No bleach. Machine wash on the wool/delicates cycle is safe, tested across hundreds of washes. It comes out as it went in. Hand-wash if you have time, but the machine won't hurt it.

What this mat is made of

This is silicone leather.

The surface is a 100% silicone coating, bonded to a fibre backing. It doesn’t off-gas, doesn’t absorb liquids, doesn’t harbour mould. Hot pans and baking trays can sit on it. It won’t crack or fade if left outside in cold or sun, and stain-resistant to food, paint, adhesives, and sunscreen.

For an outdoor mat, that last point matters. Sunscreen is the #1 permanent stain on picnic blankets and PU leather mats. Silicone leather resists it.

Produced and certified under OEKO-TEX Standard 100/1, so the same surface a baby lies on indoors is the one that goes to the park.

Smooth side up. Grip side down. The underside grips grass and floors so the mat stays flat. On loose ground, flip it: smooth side down so nothing catches in the grip texture. Two colours, two functions.

A note from Kate

I tried the plant-based leathers first. I wanted one of them to win.

Beeswax-coated cotton stops repelling anything once the wax wears off, and a mat you cannot wipe clean is not much of a mat. Apple leather is a third to a half polyurethane, so the plastic was doing the work, not the apples. Mushroom leather was the one I really wanted, and the companies making it closed.

So I chose silicone leather. I have mats from 2021 that still look new.

I keep this one in the play room through the winter and take it to the pool all summer. Same mat, two seasons that have nothing in common.

Things worth knowing

CHF 149 for a mat.

Used every day for two years, that’s about 20 Rappen a day. A picnic blanket costs CHF 40, absorbs moisture, needs washing after every use, and lasts maybe two seasons. This one outlasts all of them and never sees a washing machine.

It’s 1.1 kg. That’s heavier than a blanket.

About the weight of a water bottle. That weight is what keeps it flat on grass and stops it blowing away in the wind. A lighter mat would fold and flip. At 1.1 kg, it stays where you put it.

It arrives with fold lines.

All folded mats do. Lay it flat and use it. The creases fade as you use it. A few park picnics and they’re gone.

One reviewer couldn’t judge the size from the photos.

Fair feedback. 135 cm diameter is about the width of a single bed. Two adults and a child sit comfortably. We’re working on better scale photography.

The non-slip side wasn’t obvious from the listing.

Noted and fixed here: smooth side faces up (the surface you sit on). Textured side faces down (grips the ground). Two colours, two sides, two functions. Not reversible.

Care instructions

After outdoor use: Shake off debris, wipe with a damp cloth.

Stubborn marks: Gentle soap and water.

Deep clean: Hand-wash gently. Machine wash on the wool/delicates cycle is safe, tested across hundreds of washes. It comes out as it went in. Hand-wash if you have time, but the machine won't hurt it.

Heat-proof: You can iron on it, place hot baking trays on it, use it as a surface for anything household-hot. The only exception: red-hot coals (BBQ embers) will burn through.

Do not: Dishwasher. High heat + food residue can coat the silicone surface with a film. If someone puts it in the dishwasher by mistake: submerge the mat in a pot of gently boiled water with washing-up liquid for 30 minutes, then rinse. The film lifts off.

Storage: Roll rather than fold to minimise creasing. Fine to store it damp for daily use, or leave it in the pram basket. For longer storage, let it dry fully first.

Non-slip side: Always faces down (grips grass and floors). At the beach, flip it: smooth side down so sand doesn’t catch in the grip texture. If sand or dirt does get in the grip side, submerge the mat in water. Everything releases instantly. Much quicker than wiping.

What is the non-slip underside made of?

The same silicone as the top surface, finished with a texture so it grips instead of sliding. There is no rubber backing, no PU layer and no separate anti-slip coating. Smooth side up, grip side down.
