The changing mat and placemat that lives in your bag

It started as a changing mat. Since used as a placemat, a travel surface, a snack mat on a hiking trail, a desk protector, and a liner for a hotel bed during a five-week trip. Sometimes all in the same week.

Fold it flat and it disappears into any bag. A wipe and it's ready again in thirty seconds.

At CHF 39, it's the most useful thing in most bags.

This is silicone leather, made to take water, stains, and years of daily use.

Using Wriggle as a changing mat? Read the wipeable changing mat guide: sizes, materials, and how it compares to foam and PVC alternatives.

If the Wriggle is meant as a birth gift, I wrote a separate piece on the four questions that make a good one.

Silicone leather has a fabric base with a silicone coating on both sides. Not vinyl, not PU, not foam. One continuous piece with no seams, no tags, no stitching. Nothing to trap food, nothing to fail over time.

Free from PVC, BPA, and phthalates.

What that means in use:

  • Stain resistant: pigment doesn’t penetrate the surface
  • Self-extinguishing: no chemical flame retardant needed
  • Hot-surface tolerant: sits safely near cookers and on underfloor heating
  • Cold resistant: doesn’t stiffen or crack
  • UV-stable: doesn’t degrade in direct sun

Full certification and test documentation:

  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100/1, the class for products in direct contact with a baby's skin
  • Physiologically inert, doesn’t react with skin or food
  • Allergic dye tested
  • Radon tested, no off-gassing indoors
  • Chemical hazard tested
  • ISO 9001:2015 certified manufacturer

Designed in Switzerland, made in Korea, built for years of daily use.

  • Dual-tone finish: always know which side was last on the floor
  • Drapes over table and tray edges: follows the mess rather than stopping at it
  • Folds flat in two directions
  • Compatible with underfloor heating

The gift that keeps arriving

Gabriela K. in Switzerland has bought the Wriggle as a newborn gift more than once: "Always a great gift … they are always very surprised with the practicality and beautiful colours from the mats." At CHF 39, the Wriggle is how most people find us. It arrives in its branded packaging, the parent unfolds it, and within a week it's indispensable. Then they come back for a bigger one.

Child using Wriggle silicone mat on airplane, travel changing mat and portable mat

The one that goes in the bag

Five weeks in hotels. Airport bathrooms. The changing surface at grandma's house. Wendy L. in Switzerland: "This mat was such a lifesaver! We traveled for 5 weeks staying at hotels and when we didn't have a good place to change our baby, we put this over the bed or sofa, and it acted as the perfect cushion to prevent spills. We also used it as a food placement at the table. Love how multipurpose this is!" At 200g, it folds flat between the nappies and the wipes. You'll forget it's there until the moment you need a clean surface under a squirming baby.

On trains, in restaurants, at Airbnbs. Lay it flat, put snacks on it, play dice games on it. Nothing soaks into the surface, so a wipe resets it between the snack and the next game.

Child's craft supplies on Wriggle Yellow/Mocca silicone placemat, wipeable surface for creative activities

The surface that says yes

Playdough on the kitchen table. Watercolours after lunch. Flour everywhere during baking. The Wriggle turns "not on the table" into "go ahead." It protects the surface so you can stop hovering and just be together. Veronika in Switzerland bought a second after a year: "Our kid uses it mainly as a mat while eating or as a protection of the table when painting."

Unlike vinyl mats that sit rigid and flat, the Wriggle drapes over the edges of a table. Crumbs and spills that would normally run down the table edge get caught by the overhang.

Truly amazing product! I got

Truly amazing product! I got the big mat for myself 3 years ago when I had my first kid, to this day it looks new! We have painted on it, used it for picnics, gardening, water play. It has survived my kid's childhood so far! <3 I got a mini mat as a present for my friend trying to slowly introduce this treasure to my circle and slowly but surely make this a studio Huske world >:D haha

What a gorgeous review, I can't tell you how much I appreciate it Gabriela. So incredibly delighted to hear it's been so useful. Warm regards, Kate

We are addicts

We just LOVE and ENJOY all our mats! We are addicts. . . . we have every size of them and use them all!
I know. . . they might look a bit pricey but I promise. . . they're definitely worth it, I mean, mom math: if you use it every day, at the end is almost free. . . .
This is one of the products you'll use EVERY DAY.

This is the ultimate review and exactly why I got started. Always a delight to hear it - can't thank you enough Florence :relaxed:️

What a wonderful product! Have seen it at different people and liked it from the start, was though unsure because of the price. Then finally bought this and the very big mat and what can I say - I am amazed by its versatility and quality - it’s daily in use with our baby. Additionally, the whole brand experience is wow - customer service, branding, colors, look & feel, packaging. Cannot recommend enough!

Must have für uns!

After using the first mat

After using the first mat for one year we have decided to purchase the second one for the terrace table as well. Our kid uses it mainly as a mat while eating or as a protection of the table when painting.
Nice design and colors, high quality, durable, easy to clean (back side non sticky so it holds on to the table). Highly recommend these products from studio Huske!

Too small for our mess :)

We use it as a placemat, but it is too narrow for our consumer/artist. With that said I think + 5-7cm would make it. Other than that it is nice color and high quality product.

Great product! My daughter pees almost every time I change her and the changing-pad is so easy to wipe clean and use again. Rather than adding to the laundry pile! The changing-pad’s quality also feels and looks great. I am very satisfied with my purchase.

Nice design, but…

I boughtbthis one to use it as a changing mat and later for my child to play with. I dont think it works well as a changing mat. It has a « non slip » side which is very problematic to keep clean. If you put that side on the floor, all kimds of dirt will stick to it (hair, little stones, dist, etc). If you use that side to put your baby on it, it gets tricky to change the diper, since the sticky surface wont let you glide the diaper beneath the baby, plus it will still attract hairs and dust…

I wish there were some mats without the « non slip » option.

Hi Deborah,

Thank you for that feedback. Both sides do have a very destinct texture. The smooth side is designed for baby changing. Our products are designed to be very flexible and multifunctional and the antislip is very useful when used as a desk or table mat, so it wouldn't make sense to remove it. To clean the antislip side submerging in water is quickest, though I do know that's not always practical or possible. Lots of customers, including myself, do use it as a changing mat and are very positive about it. If you find it's not fit for your personal purposes please contact me at hello@studiohuske.com to arrange a return. Best regards, Kate

Vielzweck Matte

Without it: kneeling on a public bathroom floor, hoping the changing surface is clean enough. Wrapping a muslin around a restaurant table and praying nothing drips through.

With a Wriggle: a clean surface in your bag. Always.

What else people use it for

Customers keep finding new uses. We stopped being surprised.

Oven mat: heat-proof silicone. Take hot trays straight from the oven and put them on the mat.
Ironing surface: quick morning ironing on the kitchen island without setting up the board.
Train table: snacks, card games, colouring. A clean shared surface that packs flat.
Forest school / Waldtag: kids take it as their personal sit-and-eat surface. Packs in a rucksack.
Desk mat: someone always steals it for their home office. Protects the desk from coffee rings.
Baking mat: flour, dough, mess. Wipes clean. The table doesn't care.

Studio Huske silicone leather material samples, Wriggle placemat surface texture

What this mat is made of

This is silicone leather. Not PU. Not PVC. Not vinyl. Not the "vegan leather" that peels after 18 months.

Silicone leather is a silicone coating on a fine fabric core. It doesn't off-gas, doesn't absorb liquids, doesn't harbour mould. Hot pans and baking trays can sit on it. It won't crack or fade if left outside in cold or sun, and it is stain-resistant to food, paint, adhesives, and ballpoint pen.

Two sides, two jobs

Smooth side up. Grip side down. The underside grips your surface so the mat stays put. The grip is not a separate backing: it's the same silicone, just textured instead of smooth. Two colours, two functions.

Made to a standard

Babies lie on it, crawl on it, drool on it and sooner or later chew a corner. That is why every mat is made under OEKO-TEX Standard 100/1, the class for baby articles, safe for newborn skin and mouth contact. Every Studio Huske mat is independently tested and certified. Here's what the labels actually mean.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100/1

Tested for 1,000+ harmful substances. Class I is the highest tier in the standard, certified safe for babies.

Independently certified

CAL-117 Flammability

Passes California's strict flammability standard. All 20 test samples passed, with no ignition.

A note from Kate

I tried the plant-based leathers first. I wanted one of them to win.

Beeswax-coated cotton stops repelling anything once the wax wears off, and a mat you cannot wipe clean is not much of a mat. Apple leather is a third to a half polyurethane, so the plastic was doing the work, not the apples. Mushroom leather was the one I really wanted, and the companies making it closed.

So I chose silicone leather. I have mats from 2021 that still look new.

That was the brief from the start. Most things made for children run on planned obsolescence: a size, a season, a stage, then a replacement. This mat has none of those. There is nothing to outgrow, only uses that change, and it arrives in paper and cardboard you can recycle. It is the opposite of hedonic consumption, the quick buy that feels good on the day and is forgotten by the weekend. Fewer things to buy, wash, store and think about. I am not against owning things, I am against owning them twice.

This is the one most people meet first. Mine started life as a changing mat and now it lives on my desk, under a coffee cup, still going.

KateFounder, Studio Huske

Child snacking on a yellow Studio Huske silicone mat laid on outdoor grass

Things worth knowing

It arrives with fold lines.

All folded mats do. Lay it flat and use it. The creases fade as you use it. Walking on it, placing things on it, daily life flattens it out.

The grip side collects dust and hair.

That's its job. The underside grips your surface so the mat stays put. Smooth side up, grip side down. If it's collecting dust, it's working.

It's 65 × 37 cm. That's a placemat, not a play mat.

The Wriggle is sized for changing tables, travel bags, and table surfaces. Need more coverage for mealtimes or floor play? The Roam Round (105 cm) covers the high chair splash zone.

CHF 39 for a placemat.

The smallest mat in the range, and the one that travels. A fabric changing mat costs less and needs washing every time. This one wipes and goes back in the bag.

It can mark a sealed or lacquered surface.

One customer reported a colour change on a floor under a larger mat. That is one report and I have not worked out the cause. If your changing table or worktop is sealed or lacquered, lift the mat now and then rather than leaving it in one spot for months.

The colour may not look like it does on your screen.

No screen shows it exactly. The colour you live with is the smooth side that faces up. If it arrives and it is not what you pictured, it goes back within 60 days, clean, undamaged and in its original packaging.

Care & Info

Care instructions

Daily cleaning: Wipe with a damp cloth or wet wipe.

Stubborn marks: Gentle soap and water. No bleach.

Deep clean: Hand-wash gently. You can machine wash on your most gentle cycle (wool/delicates), but for maximum longevity, hand-wash.

Heat-proof: You can iron on it, place hot baking trays on it, use it as a surface for anything household-hot. The only exception: red-hot coals (BBQ embers) will burn through.

Do not: Dishwasher. High heat + food residue can coat the silicone surface with a film. If someone puts it in the dishwasher by mistake: submerge the mat in a pot of gently boiled water with washing-up liquid for 30 minutes, then rinse. The film lifts off.

Storage: In daily use, damp is fine as long as it is clean. For long-term storage, treat it like camping gear and store it dry.

Non-slip side: Always faces down. Will collect dust and hair (that's it gripping). Submerge the mat in water to clean the grip side. Dust, lint, and sand release instantly.

Shipping

Every order is packed and shipped in Zurich by Züriwerk, a foundation that offers people with disabilities supported workplaces and a way into the wider working world.

Switzerland: CHF 6 (B-Post, 2-4 working days).

Germany, Austria, UK: CHF 16 (FedEx, 3-8 working days).

Free shipping on orders over CHF 125 in Switzerland and over CHF 145 internationally. The Wriggle + any Roam qualifies.

How thick is it, and does it cushion?

Every Studio Huske mat is 0.7 mm thick. It won't cushion a fall the way a foam mat does, but it isn't hard like vinyl either: it feels soft underfoot and warm to the touch, and the leather-like grain is lovely to run a hand over. Being thin is what lets it fold into a bag or drape over the edge of a table, and it is tougher than the number suggests: the material is tested to 20,000 abrasion cycles.

Is the mat non-toxic?

Yes. The mats were produced and certified under OEKO-TEX Standard 100/1. That's the strictest class, written for baby products, including the ones that end up in a mouth. In the lab, the material was checked for harmful substances such as phthalates, formaldehyde, heavy metals and bisphenols, and every result came in under the limit. It was also independently tested for more than 30 PFAS compounds, and none were detected.

Can I use it for nappy-free time?

Yes. It's waterproof, wipeable, and produced and certified under OEKO-TEX Standard 100/1 for direct baby skin contact. Lay it down, let them kick. When they're done, wipe and reset.

Do the mats contain PFAS?

The finished fabric was independently tested for total fluorine and more than 30 individual PFAS compounds in the most recent testing round, none detected. Across two years of laboratory reports, not one individual PFAS compound has been detected. No test can prove an absolute, so the full numbers are published in the PFAS lab results article.
