What this mat is made of

This is silicone leather. Not PU. Not PVC. Not vinyl. Not the "vegan leather" that peels after 18 months.

Silicone leather is made from quartz sand, bonded to a fibre fabric. The surface is 100% silicone, the same grade used in infant pacifiers. It doesn't off-gas, doesn't absorb liquids, doesn't harbour mould. It's heat-proof, won't crack or fade if left outside in cold or sun, and stain-resistant to food, paint, adhesives, and sunscreen.

At this size, the material has to do everything. Survive a beach, protect a table worth thousands, look good in a living room, fold into a bag. Silicone leather is the only material that crosses that indoor-outdoor boundary without compromise.

Two sides, two jobs

Smooth side up. Grip side down. The underside grips your surface so the mat stays flat, even when three children are painting on it. On the beach, flip it: smooth side down so sand doesn't catch in the grip texture. Two colours, two functions.

Things worth knowing

CHF 178 is a lot for a mat.

It is. It's also the last one you'll buy. It covers a dining table worth thousands. Used three times a week for two years, that's 57 Rappen per use. The picnic blankets you'd replace every season cost more over the same period.

It's 1.9 kg. That's the big one.

Substantial enough to stay flat on grass, stable enough that three children can't shift it. One reviewer said they wouldn't take it to the Badi (outdoor pool) for a quick dip. Fair. This is the mat for planned outings, not spontaneous ones. For something lighter, the Explore (1.1 kg) is more grab-and-go.

It arrives with fold lines.

All folded mats do. Lay it flat and use it. The creases fade as you use it. A few family dinners and they're gone.

The grip side collects dust and hair on floors.

That's the non-slip side doing its job. Smooth side faces up (the surface you use). Grip side faces down (holds the mat in place). If you're using it on a floor long-term, clean the underside periodically. It's working, not broken.

It only comes in two colours.

Lilac/Red and Beige/Wine. The flagship size has the most curated palette. Both are neutral enough for permanent table use and bold enough for outdoor visibility.

Can I take it to the Badi?

Nappy-free time: waterproof, OEKO-TEX Class 1. Baby rolls free on a clean, warm surface. The floor stays dry.

Bike maintenance: cleaning bikes inside the house, 2 metres from the kids. Oil, grease, tyre marks wipe off.

Care instructions

After outdoor use: Shake off debris, wipe with a damp cloth. Sand falls right off.

After table use: Wipe with a damp cloth or wet wipe.

Stubborn marks: Gentle soap and water.

Deep clean: Hand-wash gently. You can machine wash on your most gentle cycle (wool/delicates), but for maximum longevity, hand-wash.

Heat-proof: You can iron on it, place hot baking trays on it, use it as a surface for anything household-hot. The only exception: red-hot coals (BBQ embers) will burn through.

Do not: Dishwasher. High heat + food residue can coat the silicone surface with a film. If someone puts it in the dishwasher by mistake: submerge the mat in a pot of gently boiled water with washing-up liquid for 30 minutes, then rinse. The film lifts off.

Storage: Roll rather than fold to minimise creasing. Fine to store it damp for daily use. For longer storage, let it dry fully first.

Non-slip side: Usually faces down (grips tables and floors). At the beach, flip it: smooth side down so sand doesn't catch in the grip texture. The grip side collects dust and hair on floors. That's normal. To clean it, submerge the mat in water: the ocean, a sink, or a bathtub. Everything releases instantly. Submerging and rinsing is the proper cleaning method for the grip side, not wiping.
