Is this just plastic?

A fair question. Most “vegan leather” play mats are PU or PVC: petroleum-based materials that require chemical processing to achieve a soft, flexible surface.

This is not that.

Silicone leather is a silicone coating on a knitted polyester base. The silicone stays soft without that processing. It does not off-gas the chemical compounds associated with plastics and synthetic foams. The surface does not react with skin, milk, food, or nappy accidents. Non-toxic, non-porous, and safe for floor-level use from birth. Produced and certified under OEKO-TEX Standard 100/1.

Care
Wipe with a damp cloth for daily use. For a full reset, submerge in the sink. The textured underside catches dust over time and a soak clears it. Mild soap is fine. No bleach. Machine wash on the wool/delicates cycle is safe, tested across hundreds of washes. It comes out as it went in. Hand-wash if you have time, but the machine won't hurt it.

We‘ve got Roam Round Activity Mats under the kids‘ high chairs plus another Square mat which lives on the kids‘ crafting table. We love the durability - it can take SO much without even looking the tiniest bit used. The design, colours and quality of the mat make it well worth its price. It took us quite a while to order the first mat, seeing that there were so many seemingly cheaper options for what (that’s we thought at the time -) would only be a floor mat. Since then, we have discovered that none of the other options we had a look at before came even close to the aesthetics and quality of our huske mats - many lacked flexibility, seemed to scratch ever so easily and just frankly did not look nearly as good. Besides we have by now realised how many more uses we found for the mats, taking them on holiday, or outside for picnics, inside the tent just to give some examples. Mat lifts from a side (can cause accident)

"I bought this with the expectation to put it on the airplane' floor for my kid to play. And after our trip under his chair or somewhere else. Positive: Weight to carry it with you on the airplane is okay Material quality is very good To clean with a wet cloth is very fast Color Size Antislippery BUT!!! (Look down) Negative: Bit unsafe. If my toddler passes, a side of the mat lifts (very often) this can cause that he can fall down. This makes it not the best to put it under his eating chair nor in the middle of a room. To just shake it to clean is not an option. It has static and hair and dust remains. Price To be honest and mainly due to fact that mat lifts from a side is a huge point not buy it again. The price is not worth for an unsafety mat that cannot only cause an accident to my toddler but to anyone at home. I saw this as recommendation on a Facebook group but saddly disappointed."

What this mat is made of

This is silicone leather. Not PU. Not PVC. Not vinyl. Not the "vegan leather" that peels after 18 months.

Silicone leather is bonded to a fibre fabric. The surface is a 100% silicone coating. It doesn’t off-gas, doesn’t absorb liquids, doesn’t harbour mould. Hot pans and baking trays can sit on it. It won’t crack or fade if left outside in cold or sun, and stain-resistant to food, paint, adhesives, and ballpoint pen.

Produced and certified under OEKO-TEX Standard 100/1, tested for harmful substances down to the limits set for baby textiles.

Two sides, two jobs

Smooth side up. Grip side down. The underside grips your floor so the mat stays flat and doesn’t slide under a kicking toddler. It’s not reversible. Two colours, two functions.

A note from Kate

I tried the plant-based leathers first. I wanted one of them to win.

Beeswax-coated cotton stops repelling anything once the wax wears off, and a mat you cannot wipe clean is not much of a mat. Apple leather is a third to a half polyurethane, so the plastic was doing the work, not the apples. Mushroom leather was the one I really wanted, and the companies making it closed.

So I chose silicone leather. I have mats from 2021 that still look new.

That was the brief from the start. Most things made for children run on planned obsolescence: a size, a season, a stage, then a replacement. This mat has none of those. There is nothing to outgrow, only uses that change, and it arrives in paper and cardboard you can recycle. It is the opposite of hedonic consumption, the quick buy that feels good on the day and is forgotten by the weekend. Fewer things to buy, wash, store and think about. I am not against owning things, I am against owning them twice.

Ours did the weaning years under the high chair. Now that the meals have calmed down it has moved up onto the table, and that is where it has stayed.

Things worth knowing

It arrives with fold lines.

All folded mats do. Lay it flat and use it. The creases fade as you use it. Walking on it, placing the high chair on it, daily life flattens it out.

The grip side collects dust and hair.

That’s its job. The underside grips your floor so the mat stays put. Smooth side up, grip side down. If it’s collecting dust, it’s working. On polished wood floors, clean the grip side periodically.

It’s round, not rectangular.

The 105 cm circle covers the splash zone under any standard high chair. If your kitchen layout needs straight edges, the Roam Square (98 x 98 cm) does the same job with right angles.

“Not a huge fan of the price.”

That’s a direct quote from a 4-star review. The same reviewer added: “but overall, it’s worth it.” Used 3 times a day for a year, that’s less than £0.11 per meal. No vinyl mat or fabric splat mat lasts a fraction of that.

It can mark a sealed or lacquered floor.

One customer reported a circular colour change on their floor. That is one report and I have not worked out the cause. If your floor is sealed or lacquered, lift the mat now and then rather than leaving it in one spot for months.

The colour may not look like it does on your screen.

No screen shows it exactly. The colour you live with is the smooth side that faces up. If it arrives and it is not what you pictured, it goes back within 60 days, clean, undamaged and in its original packaging.

Care & Info

Care instructions

Daily cleaning: Wipe with a damp cloth or wet wipe.

After meals: Shake over the bin to remove food debris, then rinse in the sink.

Stubborn marks: Gentle soap and water.

Deep clean: Hand-wash gently. Machine wash on the wool/delicates cycle is safe, tested across hundreds of washes. It comes out as it went in. Hand-wash if you have time, but the machine won't hurt it.

Heat-proof: You can iron on it, place hot baking trays on it, use it as a surface for anything household-hot. The only exception: red-hot coals (BBQ embers) will burn through.

Do not: Dishwasher. High heat + food residue can coat the silicone surface with a film. If someone puts it in the dishwasher by mistake: submerge the mat in a pot of gently boiled water with washing-up liquid for 30 minutes, then rinse. The film lifts off.

Storage: Roll rather than fold to minimise creasing. Fine to store it damp for daily use. For longer storage, let it dry fully first.

Non-slip side: Always faces down. Will collect dust and hair (that’s it gripping). Submerge the mat in water to clean the grip side. Dust, lint, and sand release instantly.

What is the non-slip underside made of?

The same silicone as the top surface, finished with a texture so it grips instead of sliding. There is no rubber backing, no PU layer and no separate anti-slip coating. Smooth side up, grip side down.

Frequently asked questions

Will food stain it?
Silicone leather resists staining from food, including tomato sauce, berries, and turmeric. Wipe promptly for best results. Unlike PU leather, it won’t absorb pigments.

Does it fit under a Tripp Trapp / Antilop / Stokke?
Yes. 105 cm covers the full splash zone of every standard high chair we’ve tested.

Is the surface safe for a baby?
OEKO-TEX 100/1 is the top safety class in the OEKO-TEX system, tested for harmful substances and approved for direct skin contact from birth.

Will it slide on tiles / wood / carpet?
The non-slip underside grips hard floors and thin rugs well. On thick carpet, smooth it flat when you lay it down. At 680g, toddlers can’t shift it.

Can I use it as a craft mat too?
Yes. Paint, playdough, glitter. All wipe off. Many customers use the Roam Round as a wipeable splat mat for messy play long after the BLW phase ends.

Does it smell?
No. Silicone leather is VOC-free. No “new mat” chemical smell.

Do the mats contain PFAS?
The finished fabric was independently tested for total fluorine and more than 30 individual PFAS compounds in the most recent testing round, none detected. Across two years of laboratory reports, not one individual PFAS compound has been detected. No test can prove an absolute, so the full numbers are published in the PFAS lab results article.
